Research and evidence-based practice (EBP) are critical components in nursing because of the contributions they make to patient safety and quality of care. Research and evidence-based practice support the creation of new knowledge, innovative practices, and quality care improvement (Grys, 2022). However, research and evidence-based practice (EBP) differ. Research entails systematic investigation or inquiry designed to develop or contribute to new knowledge for general or specific use in nursing and healthcare. Research entails the collection of data to answer questions or test a given hypothesis. The research results or outcomes establish facts, new knowledge, and conclusions that nurses and other providers can use to improve patient care and safety, especially in reducing and preventing falls among elderly patients (Grys, 2022). On its part, evidence-based practice involves the integration of clinical expertise, patient values and norms, best research evidence, and clinician’s perspective in care decision-making. Through EBP, nurses implement the best available evidence attained from scientific methods to make clinical decisions (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2022). Therefore, EBP and research differ based on purpose, methodology, and outcomes. For instance, the purpose of research is to contribute to generalizable evidence or new evidence while EBP focuses on improving patient care. The methodology in research is systematic inquiry while in EBP, it entails the integration of research, clinical expertise, and patient values. The outcomes for research include new knowledge, facts, and conclusions while EBP involves making informed clinical decisions.

A peer-reviewed article that supports the need for a change in nursing practice is by Jingxia et al. (2022) who assert that changes in the nursing practice environment, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic are essential to improving patient safety and making nurses responsive to new and innovative approaches to care delivery. The article emphasizes the importance of allowing nurses to practice to the full extent of their education as an effective way to meet the increasing patient needs. The nursing practice environment should focus on implementing EBP interventions to reduce adverse events or outcomes brought by falls and other occurrences in healthcare settings.
